Everyone is talking about how Americans are getting fatter

Everyone is talking about how Americans are getting fatter but now it’s really official.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an analysis in July 2015 finding that “75 percent of men and 67 percent of women ages 25 and older are now overweight or obese.”

Twenty years ago they found that “63 percent of men and 55 percent of women were

overweight or obese.” This latest survey is really a wake up call, since there have been so many campaigns recently to try to get Americans to eat better and exercise more.

Americans are getting fatter - sedentary jobs

Sedentary jobs don’t help.

The CDC conducted a survey that “67.6 million Americans were obese and 65.2 million overweight as of 2012. The CDC defines obese as having a body mass index of 30 or higher, and overweight as a body mass index of between 25 and 29.9.”

This is the first time in history that obese people outnumber those who are merely overweight.

What is the real reason that people are obese?

It’s more than supersize meals and sedentary lifestyles. Think of all the ways technology has changed our lifestyle. How we travel, how we do homework, what we do for work and even what we do for recreation and entertainment has all been impacted by the effects of technology on our modern society.

Moving more matters.

Edward Archer is a physiologist and obesity at the Nutrition and Obesity Research Center, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He asks, “How can skinny people still exist? If we live in an environment that promotes obesity — filled with fast food, sugary drinks, TVs and cars — why isn’t everyone obese? And if our genes cause us to be fat, why has the search for “obesity genes” failed?”

His research led to the conclusion that “the activity levels of grandmothers and mothers during pregnancy determined the fatness of future generations.” An article published by the Washington Post and written by Archer is fascinating reading.

Banning trans fats from our food supply will help America’s waistline. Eating healthier more nourishing meals will help. Getting more quality exercise and the right kind will help. Eating less sugar (which adds no nutritional value) will help.

Ridding the body of toxins by cramming a lot of fruits, vegetables and berries into the body is another way to jump start better health and weight loss. Eliminating gluten and dairy and other inflammation causing foods can also help.
